Ultrasurf Editor's Review

Ultrasurf is free internet proxy server, allowing users to browse completely anonymously, without revealing their IP address or leaving any traces of where they have been behind (such as cookies and history). After all, the internet is an international tool, but not everyone wants it to be, especially the rulers of certain less-than-democratic nations. If you find yourself somewhere with internet censorship in force, Ultrasurf will allow you to bypass restrictions and access the websites you want to. It could also be useful when using shared computers or untrustworthy connections. It requires no installation, and will work immediately with Internet Explorer and Firefox (other browsers will need to be configured manually, but should still work). A small icon appears on the screen when it is working, so you'll be sure it is.

Pros: free, easy to use, will run from a USB stick so easy to use in internet cafés and the like.

Cons: can slow down browsing.

Conclusion: A really useful piece of software, all the better for being free. It's great for travellers who want to access the whole of the internet in countries such as China which censor it heavily (certain types of searches are banned there, for example). It is this use that Ultrasurf sells itself on. There are naturally other uses, some of which might be a little more sinister. Others might just be a little cheeky, but in this case we reckon the good outweighs the bad.
